Yellowknife RCMP lay firearms charges after foot pursuit

On September 18th, Yellowknife RCMP officers attended a residence in Yellowknife in an attempt to arrest a suspect in an unrelated investigation. The suspect immediately fled from police. After a brief foot chase, officers were able to safely arrest the suspect, who was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun which was determined to have been stolen.

As a result, 18-year-old Alen Vogel of Yellowknife is facing the following charges:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a weapon obtained by crime, contrary to section 96(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Carrying a concealed weapon, contrary to section 90(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition without licence, contrary to section 95(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a firearm while knowing possession is unauthorized, contrary to section 92(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Careless use of a firearm, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm, contrary to section 86(2) of the Criminal Code

Vogel appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody.
