On September 16, 1974, 32 women from across Canada simultaneously took the oath to become RCMP police officers. They arrived at RCMP Depot on September 18 and 19, and formed Troop 17 to undertake their training. In March 1975, they graduated from Depot and started work at detachments across the country – the first women police officers in the RCMP.

On September 16, 2024, PEI RCMP were honoured to be welcomed into Government House, where Lieutenant Governor, Her Honour Antoinette Perry, hosted retired and serving RCMP women police officers. Each officer was presented a unique 50th Anniversary of Women Police Officers in the RCMP challenge coin, engraved with their Regimental Number.

Her Honour was also presented with a copy of the painting "A Ride in Time" in recognition of her service for the RCMP across PEI during her time as Lieutenant Governor. Your Honour, we cannot express how proud we are to have served with you and to support your efforts.

Without a doubt, the women of Troop 17 showed what was possible for women in the RCMP. They broke through the glass ceiling and inspired other women to join our ranks. Today, the RCMP is proud to say that women are an integral part of our workforce. Approximately one fifth of the RCMP's police officers are women, with more and more women in leadership roles.

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of Women Police Officers in the RCMP, we extend a huge thanks to all women who have served and proudly worn the Red Serge!
