RCMP Lay Charges After Aggravated Assault on Infant

Yellowknife, NT, June 24th, 2024

On April 24th, 2024, Yellowknife RCMP received a report from the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority that an infant had been admitted to Stanton Territorial Hospital with life-altering injuries of a suspicious nature. The infant was transported to Edmonton for further treatment and Yellowknife RCMP's Major Crimes Unit was engaged.

An investigation was conducted with assistance from the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority and the Child and Adolescent Protection Center in Edmonton. While that investigation was taking place, police learned that the accused had also assaulted a toddler, although the injuries were less severe.

On June 17th, as a result of the investigation, a 41-year-old female was arrested and charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault, contrary to section 268(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Assault, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code

She was held to appear before a Justice of the Peace and subsequently released to appear in Yellowknife Territorial Court at a later date.
