On May 22nd, 2024, Yellowknife RCMP received a report that several people were unlawfully inside a recently vacated apartment. Officers attended and arrested a subject who was attempting to escape through the balcony.
A search warrant was later obtained for the unit by Yellowknife RCMP's General Investigation Section. During the search, 2 handguns, over $12,000 in cash, a quantity of prescription drugs, illicit cannabis products, and a large quantity of suspected cocaine were seized, along with other drug paraphernalia.
On July 24th, 2024, Yellowknife RCMP received the results of the analysis completed on the seized drugs. It was revealed that 1 kilogram of the suspected cocaine was actually methamphetamine, which had been pressed into pill form. The RCMP believes this is the largest seizure of this substance in the Northwest Territories to date.
As a result of the investigation, 21-year-old Musab Ibrahim of Saskatoon, SK has been charged with:
· Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
· Possession of Items Intended to Produce a Substance Included in Schedule I
· Possession of a Firearm with Ammunition without a Licence, contrary to section 95(2) of the Criminal Code (2 counts)
· Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
· Being Unlawfully in a Dwelling House, contrary to section 349(1) of the Criminal Code
· Possession of a Prohibited Device, contrary to section 92(2) of the Criminal Code
He appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was released to appear in court at a later date.
Investigation into the matter remains ongoing.
