On Sept. 5, 2024, Wood Buffalo RCMP Crime Reduction Unit and Police Dog Services were conducting patrols in Janvier, Alta. and Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, Alta. A male wanted by police for breach of probation was seen in a residence on Chipewyan Prairie First Nation.
A judicially authorized warrant to enter the residence and arrest the male was obtained by police. RCMP subsequently entered the residence and arrested the 31-year-old resident without further incident.
During the arrest, police observed a prohibited weapon in the residence. An additional judicially authorized search warrant was obtained. RCMP located and seized a loaded firearm, ammunition and a prohibited magazine. Upon further examination of the firearm, it is believed to have been tampered with.
The 31-year-old individual, a resident of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, is facing additional charges:
- Three counts Weapons possession contrary to order
- Possession of a firearm when unauthorized
- Careless use of a firearm
- Possession of a prohibited weapon
- Breach of Probation
The individual was held for a judicial interim release hearing. The individual was remanded into custody and is set to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice – Fort McMurray next on Sept. 16, 2024.
