An RCMP investigation has led to charges being laid against two individuals who allegedly helped to smuggle people from Canada to the United States. Marcos Chagolla Rojas, 39, of Montréal, and Lino Guerrero Martinez, 29, of Montréal, are charged with conspiracy to commit an offence in the United States, under section 465(3) of the Criminal Code.
According to the Estrie Integrated Border Enforcement Team's investigation, the two men conspired to transport a group of people to an unguarded location on the Canada-US border. They were arrested in East Pinnacle on August 3, 2023, with a group of 11 people.
They are scheduled to appear at the Granby courthouse on February 19.
Ensuring border integrity
The RCMP works with many Canadian and American law enforcement partners, playing an important role in protecting the Canada-US border. Human smuggling is a criminal enterprise that spans the globe. Smugglers facilitate the entry of people into Canada or the United States by illegal means, while making a profit from them. By charging their passengers large sums of money to transport them, human smugglers have turned illegal migration into a lucrative business.
Our Integrated Border Enforcement Teams investigate illegal cross-border activities between ports of entry, including human smuggling and contraband trafficking.
