Sanikiluaq man arrested after police standoff

On September 28, 2024, at approximately 11:10 p.m, the Sanikiluaq RCMP responded to a firearms complaint at a townhouse residence in the 1000 block. RCMP were notified that the male had discharged a firearm and was threaten people who were in the residence with him. The people were unharmed and were able to escape.

RCMP were able to set up a secure zone and safely evacuated the neighbouring residences. RCMP tried to communicate with the male in attempts to de-escalate the situation, but were un-successful. RCMP were able to enter the residence and in an attempt to arrest the male suspect, he and the arresting officer sustained minor injuries.

After the arrest, the male suspect and the RCMP officer were treated at the local health center. The male suspect was medically cleared and was taken into custody.

The male suspect was held for a bail hearing and was remanded into custody. On September 30, 2024, he was transported to Iqaluit, Nunavut and his next court appearance is scheduled for October 2, 2024.

The Sanikiluaq RCMP have charged, Sam Ekidlak (37 years old) of Sanikiluaq, Nunavut with:

• Carless Use of a Firearm, Section 86(1) C.C
• Carry a weapon, for a purpose dangerous to the public peace, Section 88(1) C.C
• Resist Arrest, Section 129(a) C.C
• Discharge a firearm at the public, Section 244(b) C.C
• Assault a Police Officer, Section 270(1) C.C
