Norman Wells RCMP Arrest Suspect in Series of Break and Enters, Armed Robbery

Norman Wells, NT, June 25th, 2024

In the early morning hours of June 23rd, 2024 Norman Wells RCMP received a report that a masked subject had broken into an occupied residence brandishing a firearm. Police attended the residence however the subject had already fled the scene. A search for the subject was initiated.

Later that morning, another report was received that the same subject had broken into another residence and stolen valuables from within, though the residence was not occupied at the time. Shortly after this, another call was received from a member of the public advising that the subject had been seen snooping around other residences in the community. Police attended the area immediately and were able to arrest the person without further incident.

After taking the person into custody, further information was received indicating they had also broken into and stolen from a business in the community.

On June 24th, 2024, police received a further report that this accused had also held a person at gunpoint while robbing them the previous day. Additional charges were laid. No shots were reported to have been fired during these incidents and there is not believed to be any risk to the public at this time. Some of the stolen property was later located stashed within the community.

As a result of these investigations 30-year-old Kevin KIVI of Norman Wells has been charged with:

  • Breaking and Entering with Intent, contrary to section 348(1)(a) of the Criminal code
  • Breaking and Entering and Committing an Indictable Offence, contrary to section 348(1)(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Careless Use of a Firearm, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Disguise with Intent to Commit Offence, contrary to section 351(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Failure to Comply with Undertaking, contrary to section 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Mischief Under $5000 (damage to property), contrary to section 430(4) of the Criminal Code
  • Theft Under $5000, contrary to section 334(b) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of Break-in Instruments, contrary to section 351(1) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a Firearm While Knowing Possession is Unauthorized, contrary to section 92(3) of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, contrary to section 88(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Using a Firearm in the Commission of an Offence, contrary to section 85(3) of the Criminal Code
  • Pointing a Firearm, contrary to section 87(2) of the Criminal Code
  • Robbery with a Firearm, contrary to section 344 of the Criminal Code
  • Careless Use of a Firearm, contrary to section 86(1) of the Criminal Code

KIVI appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody to appear in court at a later date. These matters remain under investigation at this time.
