News release

On Aug. 12, 2024, just before 10 a.m., Kananaskis RCMP received a report of a 24-year-old missing hiker in the Kananaskis area.

RCMP alerted Kananaskis Emergency Services (KES) who advised that a conservation officer was already en route to the area in order to locate the trail head where the hiker may have started. RCMP were alerted shortly thereafter that the missing person's vehicle was located.

Police authorized a helicopter to be deployed, and by noon KES advised RCMP that the missing hiker had been located deceased on the Western slope of Mount Smuts. The deceased was transported out of the area and subsequently taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

At this time the death does not appear suspicious.

RCMP express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
