June 21, 2024
North of Teslin on Alaska Highway, Yukon

News release

June 20, 2024 – On June 19, 2024 at 1:30 pm, Teslin RCMP responded to a report of a serious motor vehicle collision between a SUV and a truck with a fifth wheel trailer on the Alaska Highway near Squanga Lake. Traffic Collision Analyst and Yukon's Chief Coroner were advised of situation and attended the scene. Two adult female occupants from Yukon were ejected from the SUV and found to be deceased. One other injured adult from the SUV and two American citizens from the truck were transported by Emergency Medical Services to Whitehorse General Hospital.

The highway was closed to traffic, and opened to one lane at approximately 10:00 pm. We appreciate the support provided by the Government of Yukon Highways and Public Works and Teslin Fire Department in managing traffic control during the investigation.

The Coroner's Service has determined the identities of the deceased individuals to be 43-year-old Martina Marie SIDNEY (BAKER) and 44-year-old Berdina Dorothy HAGER. It is understood that both women were residents of Teslin.

Preliminary investigation suggests that speed may have been a factor in this tragic incident. Yukon Coroner's Service and Teslin RCMP Detachment continue to investigate the circumstances leading to these deaths.

Condolences are offered to the families and friends of Martina and Berdina and the community of Teslin.
