Inuvik RCMP have recently received several reports of counterfeit currency circulating in the community and are warning members of the public to pay special attention to any bills used in transactions.

These particular bills are often easily identified as counterfeit upon inspection, and have been found in other communities in the Northwest Territories and throughout Canada. The bills have indicators that they are fake:

  • Chinese symbols on the bill

  • Black bars printed on the bill

  • Different sizes or materials used when compared to normal Canadian currency

  • Overall poor quality

When dealing with suspected counterfeit currency:

  • Politely refuse the note, keeping in mind the person in possession may be a victim and unaware that their money is fake.

  • Advise the person passing the note to check it with police.

  • Inform your local police detachment of the interaction.

Investigation into these reports is ongoing. Anyone who has information is asked to contact the Inuvik RCMP at 777-1111 or Crime Stoppers at http://www.p3tips.com. In the event of an emergency call, 911.
