Citizens who engage with the New Brunswick RCMP will now have the added option of holding an Eagle Feather when providing statements or being interviewed by a member of the RCMP. Similar to swearing on a bible or making a legal affirmation, all clients will have the option to swear legal oaths and affirmations using an Eagle Feather.
"The RCMP has a unique and longstanding relationship with Indigenous peoples in our province, and I am personally very proud to be a part of this collaborative and community-driven approach to engaging in meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, clients, and employees." says Assistant Commissioner Larry Tremblay. "This initiative represents a recognition of Indigenous rights and respect for Indigenous culture when engaging with the clients and communities we serve."
The Eagle Feather is revered in Indigenous culture, as the Eagle is believed to fly the highest and closest to the creator. It represents that connection and demands the holder speak the truth.
There will be a phased in approach to rolling out the use of the feathers in detachments across the province.
Eagle feather background:
- When a client enters a detachment to provide a statement, they will be given three options; to swear on a Bible, affirm or affirm with an Eagle Feather.
- The Eagle Feather may also be offered as a comfort for a client when interacting with employees at the detachment.
- The Eagle Feather can be used by all citizens. Should the client wish to use the Eagle Feather, it would be held by the client while providing their evidence or statement.
