The RCMP in New Brunswick is reminding the public to stay away from railroad tracks and railway property.

To help get the message out, RCMP members from Sackville took part in an educational road block with CN Police in Sackville on July 27. Police stopped cars near the railroad crossing at the corner of Bridge Street and Crescent Street to hand out flyers with important information on railway safety. People were reminded to only cross rail tracks at legal crossings and to never stop on the tracks, walk on them or loiter near them.

"Trespassing on railway property isn't just illegal, it's dangerous," says Jean-François LeBlanc, the Sackville RCMP detachment's Community Program Officer. "Trains do not always run on a set schedule so always expect one could be coming. If you're on or near the tracks, you can be seriously injured or killed."

Anyone caught trespassing on railway property could be issued a fine of $124.50 under the Railway Safety Act.
